It’s interesting how so many of us have grown up hearing about the need to make smart, financial investments for a safe, secure future. “Invest your money now, so it protects you later.”
It’s true that being wise about your money, there’s so much value in that. But it’s also true that our environment teaches us quite disproportionately, to mainly take care of our ‘outside’. Which can often come at the cost of taking care of our ‘inside’. We dedicate so much of our energies to protecting our surroundings for that time in the future when we’re older, retired, maybe unemployed….that we lose the capacity to think about protecting our future spirit.
Financial investments tend to monopolise our emotional and spiritual investments. Basically forgetting one while trying to remember another.
Why would that matter though? I think finding a sense of purpose for our day, a purpose for each year, for our entire lives. Building strength, humility, gratitude. These are investments that go directly into the DNA of our character. Much like financial investments, these are emotional bank accounts that we quietly make deposits into, and that we can liberally withdraw from later, if things fall apart.
Conscious, steady transactions that form our spiritual wealth. That guide you to your north when things go south. And just as much of value as any other investment in the world.
