Room Tour: My Closet

Room Tour: My Closet

It’s always SO good to have you guys come back to the blog πŸ™‚ For everyone who’s been following my little closet makeover on Instastories, I feel so excited to share the final reveal with you. Thank you for your interest and love through something so inconsequential as a closet πŸ™‚ It’s been fun.

Skipping all small talk, I’m sharing a quick “Before” of the closet (you probably saw this when we first moved in here).

And here is the ‘After’ πŸ™‚

open closet organization

It’s an open closet layout and is attached to our main bedroom (one of the reasons I picked this apartment, I loved the fact that it was open). Fortunately for us, Nabeel and I don’t share closet space, so I use this one fully and he has the one in the guest room (something that happened automatically, without any discussion, right from the first day since we’ve been married, hah).

I’ll do a little spin around this space before I get into basic details of how I organized it/set it up. So here is the left side of the closet.

The view from the other end, facing the bedroom.

Since it’s a small space, I wanted to keep it bright and airy so I chose neutral, organic colors. Also because my bedroom color tones are the same and I wanted to continue those in this space.

If you watched my Stories from the time I started setting this up (you can still see them in my ‘closet’ highlight on Instagram), I used to have my clothes hanging on this side of the closet. One of the things that worked really well in expanding the space was this shelf that I set up in place of the clothes. I didn’t realize how much it would open up the area, now it looks like an extension of the bedroom and our tiny little room actually looks bigger πŸ™‚ Plus not seeing all the clothes, actually makes it look super neat as well. I love this addition. I bought it through the cash I got back from other life purchases, so it was practically free, so always a good idea to redeem your cashback or card points πŸ™‚

One of my main interests is always making sure that any space is also functional, and it’s not just about the decor. So I very carefully planned out how I use different things in my closet, which areas I tend up to mess up more than others and why – and then I designated spots to organize everything. Each basket on this shelf is dedicated for a different purpose (as much purpose as a basket can have, lulz). Like the shelf with the trunk basket now carries my hair tools, all in one place, something that I always wanted.

I also plugged in an extension cord and attached it behind the shelf so I could have outlet points in the closet area (I’ll show on Stories soon, we added it after I took photos). One of the things I think a lot of us do is that we don’t add convenience to some of our everyday tasks. So we’ll drag things from one corner to the other every single day, but we won’t take a few minutes to take away that everyday hassle (I’m as guilty of it). I really wanted to make this space a joy to get dressed up in every morning and be as hassle free as possible.

This section has some clothes but mainly this chest of drawers, that carries a lot of stuff that I use regularly. The upper drawer is my cosmetics, the second carries my pajamas/sleepwear and the last one has hair and skincare products. I also left space on the railing to add more pants and just generally have breathing space if I get more stuff later.

I specifically hung this dress on the wall because it felt like a design detail that would work for a closet – so instead of artwork, I used clothes πŸ™‚ I think it’s neutral enough to not feel too jarring to the eyes, but also looks really nice (to me) from even outside the closet.

I have my bags spread out across my room based on my use. So some bags are in a basket on the top shelves (I use those infrequently), these ones are hanging here (on a bag hanger that Nabeel 3D printed, check my Insta highlights πŸ™‚) and two of my most frequently used ones are hanging on my mirror in the bedroom because I find it too easy to grab them from that spot (will show in the bedroom reveal soon).

One change that I had been wanting to make since many, many years was to have uniformly colored hangers for all my clothes. Since I spend a limited amount each month, these always kept getting pushed to another day. Finally I got them and it truly does feel so therapeutic he he. I picked wooden hangers because I never want to purchase a plastic hanger ever again (I didn’t throw my previous plastic ones, I gave them to someone to reuse).

The top shelves of my closet naturally carry all things that I don’t reach for frequently but are separated by different baskets so they’re categorised properly. So I have stuff like my bedding (bedsheets, quilt covers, pillow cases), handbags, winter stuff, desi clothes, and some other random things.

Also while adding baskets, I made sure to add enough variation in the baskets to not have too much similarity all over but also in the color tones.

80% of the my closet is organized by color (it really feels softer on the eyes) but since I like functionality too πŸ™‚ my jackets aren’t part of this color coding and just hanging at one end in whatever order.

I didn’t really have proper plans to set this up in such detail when I bought this shelf (which is when it all started), but it felt so good to let go of a lot of my things, to organize things by use/my habits that I’d been wanting to do since we moved in. So once the shelf was up, I kind of kept going. I bought some secondhand stuff, reused things from around the apartment, and also sold off a lot of the stuff that I no longer used and using the money from that, bought most of the things to organize it. It truly felt like a labor of love.

I know it’s ‘just a closet’ but I think there is immense value in adding order and a kind of ‘sakoon’ to the start of your day. Just getting ready here and starting my morning with a space that takes care of me, versus me struggling through it, has made all the difference.

I also really wanted to have some lighting in the space, just for some ambience at night, and so I added this tiny little lamp that actually does such a good job at night πŸ™‚ The shell dish is secondhand and I added some earrings to it just for the aesthetics πŸ˜›

Also added some bits to decorate the top part of the chest of drawers – things that would be easy to have in the closet and not fall over etc – while also being used. Like the wick dipper is for the candle I light in my bedroom, the mini basket carries a few things like scissors, thread, etc.

Under the main clothes section, I added three things: One laundry basket for all our clean laundry before it goes for ironing, this keeps washed laundry out of sight and not be sitting in a corner making you cry πŸ˜› (I’ve always had this). The box at the bottom holds all my extra shoes that I don’t wear frequently. And the briefcase on top holds my jeans that are a part of my everyday. I never like my jeans to be hung up too properly because I know myself and I know I’ll never keep them in order if I have to hang them everyday. So I casually fold them and throw in a corner – this helps me keep them organized while not actually trying; this method has worked for me for many, many years so I stick to it πŸ™‚ (Does anyone remember this briefcase I got in Dubai, I bought it from a closing down sale, it’s over 35+ years old)

Naturally, plants had to be in the game πŸ™‚ I bought this cutting from someone on Facebook marketplace and she gave me this jar with it (it was for jam or something). I felt it went so well here that I kept it.

The rug was a secondhand find, but in a very brand new way. I found someone selling an unopened rug, exactly the kind I wanted, and probably is one of my most favorite things about this space πŸ™‚

I hope you liked this tour. I’ll do a video tour on Stories tomorrow, so come hang out there. Let me know how you liked it and if you’ve got any questions, I am at your service πŸ™‚ Also, if you want to see it all from the very beginning, check out my ‘closet’ highlight on insta.

And if you missed my entryway reveal from a couple of months ago, you can see it here.

My love and prayers if your home was damaged in the recent rain in Pakistan. Even though I know the road to rebuilding your spaces is a long one, I still wanted to offer my respect and support by delaying all my home content for a few weeks, and now even as I recontinue, you are in my thoughts. For everyone else, who may want to donate to the lesser privileged people, my fundraiser is still open.
